The documents below show our school curriculum.  We operate a two year rolling programme (Year A and Year B) to successfully accommodate the needs of our mixed aged classes.  This ensures the entire National Curriculum is covered in a sequential way throughout a pupils’ time at our school. Our class structure is currently Reception and Year 1 in Kingfisher Class, Year 2 in Swan Class, Year 3 and 4 in Heron Class and Year 5 & 6 in Starling Class.

Due to numbers the split of year groups can alter from year to year, however our curriculum and the professionalism of the teachers ensures all children engage in the highest quality teaching and curriculum experience.

Each curriculum area consists of key concepts which are made explicit within each topic and taught across the whole school.

History - Democracy, Conflict, Empire and Invasion

Art - Experiment, Creativity, Reflect and Develop

PE - Physical competence, Sportsmanship, Health and Fitness

Design and Technology - Design, Make, Evaluate and Technical Knowledge

Charlton Mackrell Curriculum Intent:

As a school, we have set our curriculum intent with the children at the centre.  Our school curriculum is underpinned by our Christian ethos and school vision.

• It is tailored to meet the needs of Charlton Mackrell school, in the context of our small numbers and rural location.
• It is rooted in the needs of our community, drawing on local culture and history. An example of this is our acknowledgement of our growing military families with topics relating to flight and making links with our local farming community.
• Provides experience of and connections to the world beyond the school in both time and place through a comprehensive programme of external visits and visitors to school.
• Provides a broad range of creative learning experiences to develop children’s moral, spiritual, social, mental, physical and cultural understanding through our values and the development of a contextually relevant curriculum.
• Provides opportunities for pupils to understand and develop our Christian values and links with the church.
• Is ambitious for all pupils and provides additional opportunities to inspire ambition within our pupils, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
• Recognises, celebrates and welcomes each pupil as a unique individual.
• Secures pupils’ core skills, knowledge and understanding to at least an age appropriate level and beyond, and is expertly adapted for our pupils with additional barriers to learning.
• Provides careful coverage of the National Curriculum with clear progression from EYFS to Y6.
• Provides enrichment opportunities to broaden and enhance the learning experience for all pupils.
• Is flexible and responds to pupils’ feedback, the evaluations of how well pupils learn and make progress, and in pupils’ performance in external and internal assessments.
